Why do you help Children through SMILE?

People are suffering with lot of problems but I can’t help all the people now. Except the natural disasters, the main reason of most of the problems is lack of education. I don’t know if it is possible to ask an uneducated adult to start studying after he became a family man but we can ask their children to study so that their future will be bright. They may face problems now because they didn’t study but if we help their children’s education then their children will resolve all their problems and one day they will not be having any problems. That’s the reason we are helping only children. This is just a butterfly effect concept.
I get a small satisfaction if they come and say, “Anna neenga sollikudutha 10 mark vanthuchu exam la, neenga sonna mathirye ezhuthiruken”. This is just a small help which I can able to do but getting a full satisfaction which I will not get anywhere for anything…….

I have seen many children suffer ... in my childhood... and i was in a position wherein i could not but just see them suffer.... Suffering here is just a generic term... May it be education or health care, no one was there to teach what is right or wrong... In my village esp, there was no one very social, who would go and help out children at those places... In dat little group, there were many who were aspiring to b an IAS, some who wanted to b teachers, few who aimed at doctor, and few more who wanted to build ships n planes :) and most of them have now ended up as servant maids in rich homes.. The reason - No one was there to guide them, no one to sponsor them... I decided, in case I grow up to earn even a meager amount,I will contribute a part of it for children like this... And dats how I started my contribution to SMILE...

Why do you want to help children through SMILE?

SMILE is the right and transparent channel and I believe SMILE exceeds our expectation in helping children with new and efficient ways which many of us may not think of doing.

What do you get out of it?

Self-satisfaction in realizing atleast one could Smile because of us..like a child feeling happiness when receving a gift from someone who is our icon, because we are not giving something, instead we are receiving something inturn.

Why are you so interested in helping children when others dont care?

Just the thought, how could we be, if we had no body to bring us up this way. Many children face difficulties for no fault of theirs.So its children always.

What makes you contribute to SMILE?
SMILE is a dream come true. Im sure the contribution reaches the proper hands and is 100% utilized for social welfare.

I was always under your (My college Seniors) shadow. Hence joined SMILE
I get a feel which I can’t tell in words. Kids, food, fun and entertainment, class, anniversary function etc etc… somewhere in the corner of my heart I am proud of all these we do.
Somewhere someone is helping children through some means. i am one of those. Even we help people we see in streets. If Smile opens door, I would add each and every child I see in the streets.

We help Children through SMILE,because we know that the money we spent for them go will go through valid reliable stream and reach the children for sure rather than spending it through some funding options that govt provide,as they would be taken or bribed by the political people and in between and only 10% of we spent will reach them.(Not even sure if 10% reaches).

Sadhana 2011 - Project Update

SADHANA 2011 has achieved some major milestones as listed below:
1) For the first time SMILE is spreading out its wings and reaching out to students all over Tamilnadu for SADHANA.
2) For the first time our students are studying in lucrative courses such as Costume design course, fashion technology, Diploma in special education etc.
3) For the first time SMILE is joining hands with social welfare department. Under this arrangement, the students college fees will be taken care of by SMILE and the students will stay in their respective hostels for higher education. This is a significant achievement in social welfare department.
4) For the first time 77 students from Government homes all over tamilnadu are enabled to pursue their higher education through SMILE.
5) And last but not the least, SADHANA’s budget is going to touch a phenomenal - 19 lakhs.

All the above listed achievements have solely been possible due to the tireless efforts and contributions from our dear SMILE sponsors & members. We will have to honestly agree that there is no free lunch in this cruel world. We need your everlasting support to bring SMILE to more people crossing all the taboos and barriers.

August 14 - PDC @ Namakkal We have taken PDC sessions last year in 2 Namakkal schools in November & January months respectively. With the result of this, the school teachers have called us to conduct PDC at the start of this year.. We have taken PDC @ Govt hr sec school, Balasamuthram with our New PDC book. It was a good session. Now we have received invites to conduct PDC from 5 more schools in Namakkal district. Another good move in PDC. August 15 - Suyam Independance day celebrations Every year we used to celebrate Independance day @ Suyam Siragu School. August 21 - PDC @ Kanchipuram home With the continuation good results from walltax and kosapet home, we have been called to take classes for Kanchipuram home students. As the initiative we have conducted PDC for 12th students. August 27 - PPRR selection process We have conducted interviews for 11th and 12th students from Perungattur & Anukkavoor Schools.we have selected 12 students from the above 2 schools. Sep 3 - Madurai Students Schlorship distribution and Meeting Hope every one aware of our SADHANA11 project which has reached almost all the Govt orphanage homes from Tamil Nadu.We have splited the students into two main zones South and North. We have distributed schlorship letter to North zone students on SMILE 7 function. we have arranged a separate Program for Madurai Students. There are 22 students from Madurai Zone which includes Ramnad, Dindigul, Sivagangai and Madurai. We have given a "FILE " to all the students. Special thanks to Ganesh for sponsoring 100 files for SADHANA11 students.Then We have given a " YOU CAN WIN " book to all the students. Thanks to Ramya for sponsoring the books.

7th Anniversary Digest

The usual euphoria prevailed among the volunteers at Ethiraj College on Sunday, 7^th August. This is one day in a year when most of the members meet each other. The Auditorium was filled with a mix of colors- blue uniformed 12^th standard students; volunteers in white T shirts; and sponsors, beneficiaries, teachers, wardens & social activists all representing rest of the palette.

The function started with “Journey of SMILE”- a multimedia presentation highlighting the moments & milestones crossed. It’s amazing to watch how the organization has grown since 04-04-04.

“Me and SMILE” – This was the title of the following session. Two beneficiaries of SMILE came forward to describe how SMILE/smile came into their lives and how their lives changed. Nirmala, one of the students from government home talked about the early days of SMILE, when she was in her 8^th standard and how she grew along more confident & mature through SMILE’s various projects. Next came Logampal, who revealed how she almost missed SMILE’s scholarship, but is now a student editor in Anantha Vikatan. Valliganthan, one of SMILE's volunteers talked about how SMILE has changed his life and on the lessons he learnt from students while teaching/interacting.

Followed by this, the 'Project Report for 2010-2011' was presented and later 'Sadhana 2011' was launched by distributing Scholarship Certificates to the students. While launching the project, one important point that was brought out by Vasudevan, In-charge of Sadhanaproject was that, Gathering funds is not a difficult task; people are out there to donate for any good cause. But the challenge is in mentoring these students. It’s not monitory support that would change the lives of these children- it’s guiding & molding them that matters. Vasu also added, “You won’t know, how valuable is that 10 minutes you spend with your student, though it’s not a big deal for you”

The long awaited Chief Guest’s Speech came next, Mr. Badri Seshadri started by appreciating SMILE’s projects and how they’ve completed a full circle, by starting to spend time with the home children, and later teaching, guiding, supporting higher education and end up helping them to get a job and there by change their lives.

He lauded SMILE’s collaboration with the government and its intervention through monitory support for the needy. “Your intervention will multiply from 100s to 1000s to 10000s, and that’s the value that you create, which is tremendous”. He advised SMILE members to document their work, pointing out that the organization is growing big and it needs to be well structured. “Documenting yourself will pull other like- minded people and organisations (towards a similar goal).”

He emphasized the members to specialize each person in one trait and also voiced for the need of a theoretical framework and to take it to the next phase. Later he addressed the students on the opportunities given to them, which many others haven’t got. He instructed them to sacrifice on certain things to achieve their goal, and to become roll models.

Following his speech Mr.Badri Seshadiri and Mr.Nithayanathan, Secretary of SMILE released a book 'புன்னகைப்பாலம் வழிகாட்டி'. Nithya talked on the purpose of bringing out the book, which is based on the Personality Development Classes conducted across various schools by Team Shiksha. The students who attend PDC sessions, deviate from the motivation given & techniques taught after sometime, as there is no follow up. This book would now be given to every student attending PDC sessions and would help them in refurbishing concepts taught to them.

The handy book would focus on aspects like: Time management, Learning Techniques, Handwriting skills/presentation, Exam fear, Health, Confidence/self-confidence, Managing failure and recovering from it and also on the importance of cut-off marks (BE/MBBS admission) and Educational loans. Its based on the concept that merely studying doesn’t fetch marks, there is lot more.

The morning session ended with felicitating volunteers who contributed extraordinarily in this academic year with SMILE Excellence Awards.

By 5.00PM, the long but exciting day came to an end with charged up minds bidding adieu to each other.

Post lunch session was in a lighter note, with culturals performed by home girls and informal discussions among students, volunteers, mentors & sponsors.

புன்னகையை விதைக்கும் இளைஞர்கள்

சென்ற ஞாயிறு அன்று எதிராஜ் கல்லுரியில் நடைபெற்ற ஒரு நிகழ்ச்சியில் கலந்துகொண்டேன். Smile Welfare Foundation என்ற தொண்டமைப்பின் ஏழாம் ஆண்டு நிறைவுவிழா.

இந்த அமைப்பை ஆரம்பித்த அனைவரும் ஈரோட்டில் இருக்கும் Institute of Road and Transport Technology என்ற கல்லூரியின் மாணவர்கள். படித்து முடித்து பல்வேறு இடங்களுக்கு வேலைக்குச் சென்றபிறகு, ஓரளவு சம்பாதிக்கத் தொடங்கியபிறகு ஏதோ செய்யவேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. அப்படி 2004-ல் உருவானதுதான் மேலே சொன்ன அமைப்பு.
ஆரம்பத்தில் அவர்கள் சேர்த்த சிறுமளவு பணத்தை ஏதேனும் நல்ல காரியங்களுக்குத் தருவது என்று மட்டும்தான் யோசித்திருந்தனர். பின்னர் தமிழக அரசு நடத்தும் (அனாதை) இல்லங்களுக்கு ஏதேனும் செய்யலாம் என்று அவர்களுக்கு யாரோ அறிவுறுத்தியுள்ளார்.
தமிழக அரசின் இல்லங்கள், ஆதரவற்றவர்களுக்காக நடத்தப்படுவது. ஒற்றைப் பெற்றோர் குடும்பங்கள், தம் பிள்ளைகளை எந்தவிதத்திலும் சரியாக வளர்க்க முடியாதோர் ஆகியோர் தம் பிள்ளைகளை இந்த இல்லங்களுக்கு அனுப்பிவைக்கிறார்கள் என்று நினைக்கிறேன். எனக்கு இந்த இல்லங்கள் பற்றிய முழுமையான தகவல் கிடையாது. நான் இந்த இல்லங்களுக்குச் சென்று பார்த்ததும் கிடையாது.
ஸ்மைல் குழுவினர் சென்னை கொசப்பேட்டையில் இருக்கும் பெண்கள் இல்லத்துக்குச் சென்று அவர்களுக்குத் தேவையான சில பொருள்களை வாங்கிக்கொடுத்துள்ளனர். அப்போது அந்த இல்லத்தின் பொறுப்பாளர், உண்மையில் இந்தப் பெண்களுக்குத் தேவை கல்விக்கான உதவி என்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறார். பணம் அல்ல; நேரம். இந்தக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு பாடங்களில் உதவ யாரும் இல்லை. டியூஷன் என்று வெளியே எங்கும் செல்லமுடியாது. எனவே இல்லத்துக்கே வந்து டியூஷன் சொல்லிக்கொடுக்க முடியுமா என்று அவர் கேட்டிருக்கிறார். அப்படி ஆரம்பித்ததுதான் அவர்களுடைய சிக்‌ஷா திட்டம். கொசப்பேட்டை, வால்டாக்ஸ் சாலை ஆகிய இடங்களில் உள்ள இல்லங்களில் 6 முதல் 8 வகுப்பு வரை உள்ள பிள்ளைகளுக்கு விளையாட்டு கலந்து பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித்தர ஆரம்பித்திருக்கிறார்கள்.
அங்கிருந்து அடுத்த கட்டமாக புன்னகைப் பாலம் என்ற திட்டத்தில், 10, 12 வகுப்புப் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு அதிக மதிப்பெண்கள் பெறும் விதமாகப் பயிற்சி தரத் தொடங்கியுள்ளனர்.
ஒரு தன்னார்வலர் என்னிடம் இவை பற்றி விளக்கமாகச் சொன்னார். தன்னார்வலர்களோ பெரும்பாலும் ஆண்கள். இவர்கள் உதவச் செல்லும் இல்லங்களோ பெண்களை மட்டுமே கொண்டவை. இல்ல அலுவலரிடம் நம்பிக்கை ஏற்படுத்தி பயிற்சிகள் நடக்கும்போது திடீரென அலுவலர் இடம் மாறுவார். எனவே மீண்டும் ஆரம்பித்திலிருந்து அந்தப் புதிய அலுவலரிடம் தொடங்கவேண்டும். இதனால் எத்திராஜ் மகளிர் கல்லூரியைத் தொடர்புகொண்டு அங்கிருந்தும் சில தன்னார்வலர்கள் வந்து பாடம் கற்பிக்கத் தொடங்கினர். மேலும் ஸ்மைல் தன்னார்வலர்கள் பலரும் அலுவலகங்களில் வேலை செய்பவர்கள். தின அலுவல்கள் தாண்டி அவர்களுக்கு நேரம் கிடைப்பதே சிரமம். அதற்கிடையிலும் பலர் குறைந்தபட்சம் வார இறுதியிலாவது இல்ல மாணவிகளுக்குப் பாடங்கள் கற்பித்தனர்.
இதன் விளைவாக தேர்வு பெறுவோர் எண்ணிக்கையும் அதிகரித்தது. அவர்கள் பெற்ற மதிப்பெண்களும் அதிகரித்தன. இப்போதெல்லாம் கிட்டத்தட்ட 100% தேர்ச்சி பெறுகிறார்கள் என்று நினைக்கிறேன். முன்னெல்லாம் இந்த இல்லங்களில் இருந்த பல பெண்களும் பத்தாம் வகுப்பு தேர்ச்சி பெறாமலேயே மீண்டும் ஏழைமை வாழ்க்கைக்குத் திரும்பியபடி இருந்தனர். ஆனால் இப்போது மட்டும் என்னவாம்?
பள்ளிப் படிப்பு முடித்தாயிற்று. பிறகு, மீண்டும் அதே ஏழைமை வாழ்க்கைதானே?
அதனால்தான் ஸ்மைல் தன்னார்வலர்கள் சாதனா என்ற திட்டத்தைக் கொண்டுவந்தனர். தேவை கல்லூரிப் படிப்பு. ஏதோ ஒரு டிகிரி. அத்துடன் மிகுந்த தன்னம்பிக்கை. அதைக்கொண்டு ஒரு நல்ல வேலையைப் பெற்றுவிட முடியாதா என்ன?
ஆனால் இந்த மாணவிகள் எங்கு தங்கிப் படிப்பார்கள்? கல்லூரிக்கான கட்டணம் ஆண்டுக்கு ரூ. 1,500-ஓ என்னவோதான். ஆனால் ஹாஸ்டலில் தங்கிப் படிக்கவேண்டுமென்றால் ரூபாய் 15,000 ஆகுமே? அந்தப் பணத்தில் இன்னும் பலரைப் படிக்கவைக்கலாமே?
ஸ்மைல் நிர்வாகிகள் தமிழகசமூக நலத்துறை அலுவலர்களிடம் சென்று பேசினர். ஏற்கெனவே 12-ம் வகுப்பு வரை இந்த இல்லங்களில் தங்கிப் படிப்பவர்களை தொடர்ந்து அதே இல்லங்களிலேயே தங்க அனுமதிக்க முடியுமா? இருப்பிடமும் உணவும் தரமுடியுமா? படிப்புக்கான செலவை ஸ்மைல் அளிக்கும்.
இதுவரையில் இப்படிப்பட்ட ஒன்றைச் சிந்தித்திராத சமூக நலத்துறையினர் நல்ல முடிவையே எடுத்தனர். தமிழகத்தில் ஏதேனும் ஓர் இல்லத்தில் தங்கி பள்ளிவரை படித்த மாணாக்கர்கள், அடுத்து கல்லூரிக்குச் செல்வதாகா இருந்தால் மீண்டும் அதுபோன்ற இல்லங்களில் தங்கிக்கொள்ளலாம்.
ஸ்மைலின் சாதனா திட்டம் நன்றாகச் செயல்படத் தொடங்கியது. பணத்தை எப்படியாவது திரட்டிவிடலாம் என்கிறார்கள் இவர்கள். இந்தக் கல்லூரிதான் என்றில்லை. குறைந்தபட்சம் ஒரு மாணவி மருத்துவக் கல்லூரியில் படிக்கிறார். சிலர் பொறியியல் கல்லூரிகளில் படிக்கிறார்கள். மீதமுள்ள அனைவரும் கலை அறிவியல் கல்லூரிகளில் படிக்கிறார்கள்.
சரி, கல்லூரியில் படித்துவிட்டு வெளியே வந்தால் என்ன செய்வது? இந்த மாணவர்களுக்கு சாஃப்ட் ஸ்கில்ஸ் பயிற்சி கொடுத்து, ஆங்கிலம் சொல்லிக்கொடுத்து வேலைவாய்ப்பும் ஏற்படுத்திக்கொடுக்க பிலேஸ்மெண்ட் செல் ஒன்றை உருவாக்கியுள்ளது ஸ்மைல்.
இது தவிர சாஃப்ட் ஸ்கில் சொல்லிக்கொடுக்க கிராமப்புறங்களுக்குச் செல்கிறார்கள். இவர்கள் கல்வி உதவித்தொகை தந்து படிப்பை முடித்த சில மாணவர்களுக்கு வேலையும் வாங்கிக்கொடுத்துள்ளனர்.


நிகழ்ச்சியின் தொடக்கத்தில் இரு பெண்கள் பேசினர். இந்த இல்லங்களில் வசித்து, ஸ்மைல் கொடுத்த உதவியால் வாழ்க்கையில் முன்னுக்கு வந்த பெண்கள். (நாள் கடந்து எழுதுவதால் அவர்களது பெயர் எனக்கு ஞாபகத்தில் இல்லை.) எந்த அளவுக்கு ஸ்மைல் அவர்களது வாழ்க்கையை முன்னுக்குக் கொண்டுவந்துள்ளது என்பதை அருகிலிருந்து பார்க்கமுடிந்தது.
ஸ்மைல் தன்னார்வலர்களுக்கு தாங்கள் என்ன செய்கிறோம் என்பது முழுமையாகப் புரிந்திருக்கிறதா என்று தெரியவில்லை. அவர்கள் உண்மையில் ஒரு சமூகப் புரட்சிக்கான விதையை நட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். வெறும் புலம்பல்கள் மட்டுமே மலிந்த மத்தியதரத்தினர் வசிக்கும் இந்தியாவில், மாபெரும் மாற்றத்தைத் தங்களால் கொண்டுவரமுடியும் என்பதை இவர்கள் காட்டியிருக்கிறார்கள். அலட்டல் இல்லாமல், ஆரவாரம் இல்லாமல், சிறிதாகத் தொடங்கி வலுவாக முன்சென்றபடி உள்ளனர் இவர்கள்.
ஏழைமையை ஒரே வாரத்தில் ஒழித்துவிடுவோம் என்று மார்தட்டும் அரசியல் ஆரவாரப் பேச்சல்ல இவர்களது. முன்கூட்டியே திட்டமிட்டு, இப்படித்தான் செல்லப்போகிறோம் என்று பாதையைத் தீர்மானித்து இவர்கள் ஆரம்பிக்கவில்லை. நம்மால் என்ன செய்யமுடியுமோ, முயன்று பார்க்கலாம் என்று ஆரம்பித்துள்ளனர். ஒவ்வொரு கட்டத்திலும் அடுத்து என்ன செய்யவேண்டும் என்பதற்கான பாதை தெளிவாகத் தெரிய ஆரம்பித்துள்ளது.
அவர்களது செயல்முறையில் எனக்குப் பல அம்சங்கள் பிடித்திருந்தன.
1. அரசு அமைப்புகளுடன் வேலை செய்தல். ஆனால் அதே நேரம் அரசின் பணத்தை நம்பியிருக்காமை.2. பணம் எப்படியும் சேர்த்துவிடலாம் என்ற அதீதமான நம்பிக்கை. இந்த பாசிடிவிசம் ஒன்றுதான் அவர்களை தைரியமாக முன்செல்ல வைக்கிறது. இந்தியாவில் இருந்துகொண்டு ஏதோ ஒரு மேற்கத்திய மத நிதியமைப்புக்கு புரபோசல் எழுதிப் பணம் சேர்த்து, எஸ்.யு.வி வாங்கிக்கொண்டு சமூக சேவை செய்யும் அமைப்பல்ல இவர்களது. 3. முழுமையான ஒரு தொலைநோக்கு இவர்களிடம் உள்ளது. அடிப்படைத் தேவைகளைத் தருகிறது அட்சயா திட்டம். படிப்பை வெறுக்கும் மாணவர்களுக்கு விளையாட்டாகக் கல்வியை அறிமுகப்படுத்துகிறது சிக்‌ஷா. ஆனால் அதே நேரம் பள்ளி இறுதி வகுப்பை நல்ல மதிப்பெண்களுடன் கடக்க உதவுகிறது புன்னகைப் பாலம். அங்கிருந்து கல்லூரிக்கு இட்டுச் செல்கிறது சாதனா; பின் வேலையும் பெற்றுத்தர உதவுகிறது.4. ஸ்மைல் தன்னார்வலர்களுக்கும் உதவி பெறுபவர்களுக்கும் இடையில் சகோதர பாசம் நிலவுகிறது. நான் கொடுக்கிறேன், நீ பெறுகிறாய் என்ற இறுமாப்பு இல்லை. நிஜமான மனிதநேயத்தைக் காண முடிகிறது.5. இது ஒரு செகுலர் அமைப்பு. சாதி, மதங்களற்ற ஒரு பார்வையை முன்வைக்கிறது.
இவர்கள் பெரிதாக வளரவேண்டும். பல இளைஞர்களுக்கு வழிகாட்டிகளாக இருக்கவேண்டும். ஆதரவற்ற ஆனால் பெரும் திறமைகொண்ட இந்திய இளைஞர்கள், தம் உண்மையான திறமையைப் பறைசாற்ற இவர்கள் உதவவேண்டும்.
